Nowadays, this theory is largely used in Image Processing and Computer Vision to extract information from images. the KHOROS system is an open and general environment for Image processing and Visualization that has become very popular. One of the main charactreistics of KHOROS is its flexibility, since it runs on standard machines, support several data formats, uses a visual programming language, and has tools to help the used to build his on programs. A set of new programs can be organized as a subsystem, called Toolbox. This paper presents a fast and comprehensive Mathematical Morphology Toolbox for the KHOROS system, that deals with one dimensional signals, binary, gray-scale and multiple band images. Each program that is applied to gray-scale and binary images has specialized algorithms for each of these data types, and are chosen automaticaly according to the input data. these implemented algorithms running on current general purpose workstations are as fast as the equivalent ones running on specialized hardware with 1986 technology.", citationkey = "BarreraBanoLotu:1995:MMT", entrytype = "Misc", repository = "ime.usp.br/jb/1996/04.03.14.02", } @Article{BarreraBanoLotuHira::MMM, author = "J. A drawback of this approach is that the representation of some operators is not efficient, since it uses a large number of elementary operators. Fast algorithms are the solution found by some authors to implement image operators that have complex representations. Two drawbacks of this solution are: i- they change the architecture of the software that implement the operators by the morphological representation. ii- these implementations are very specific and can not be used to implement other operators. Here, we study some of these fast algorithms and show that they can be transformed into morphological representations with equivalent performance, if proper data structures and algorithms are used to implement the elementary operators. This model, that is a conceptual improvement of the one proposed by Vincent, permits a natural polymorphic extension of classical softwares for image processing by Mathematical Morphology. The major advantage we see on adopting this paradigm for the problem of OCR is that our end results are rooted on a sound and well-founded mathematical theory, thus providing our results with desirable robustness and explanatory power of the underlying features of this particular problem. In order to preserve mathematical rigour, all functions for image transformation in our system are expressed in terms of the theory of Mathematical Morphology ( MM for short) -- a very general formalism to describe lattice transformations that has been used as means to express image transformations. Besides its ellegance and rigour, MM has been widely adopted as the language to describe image transformations because of its nice computational features. A short introduction to {\MM} is given and then two morphological approaches are given for segmentation: an heuristic and a non-heuristic one. The equivalence between the classical and the morphological approaches is shown and several illustrative examples of the morphological approach are given. The work also shows some important fast algorithms which simulate some of the operators used in the segmentations and how to use them to segment images. Finally it shows how to use the ideas behind the fast algorithms to implement efficiently the elementary operations and operators of {\MM} so other complex operators can be implemented more efficiently than before. For this we use a cylindrical structuring element with two varying parameters: the radius r and the height (or intensity) k. The measurement associated with this gray-scale granulometry is based on the computation of the contributing non-zero points in the opened image, instead of the volume measurement commonly used. The proposed diagram is therefore a bidimensional space of variables r and k. Two particular cases are of interest: r=0, which is the negation of the classical intensity cumulative histogram widely used in image processing; and for constant k, it is the traditional application of binary granulometry applied to the gray-scale image thresholded at k. The variation of both r and k provides the integration of the size and intensity information into a single graphic. Through Mathematical Morphology theory it is possible to proof that any operator can be decomposed in terms of four classes of elementary operators: dilation, erosion, anti-dilation and anti-erosion. Another important result is that in sup-generated lattices these elementary operators are characterized by structuring functions. Examples of structuring functions are the ones based on neighborhood graphs. We can construct a formal language on a finite set of complete lattices, using the elementary operators of Mathematical Morphology and the operations of infimum and supremum of each lattice. This language is called a morphological language. An implementation of the morphological language is called morphological machine. An example of a morphological machine is the MMach Toolbox, implemented on the image processing system KHOROS. In Vincent'89 are studied morphological operators constructed through neighborhood graphs. Inspired in this paper we proposed an extension of MMach Toolbox that deals with operators based on neighborhood graphs. Applying these operators we can solve image processing problems which depend on neighborhood relations between objects, for example: detection of defect lines in alloy images; segmentation of eucalypt pulpwood images; network analysis of cornea endothelial cell images; segmentation of images in general.", citationkey = "Zampirolli:1997:OMB", entrytype = "MastersThesis", repository = "dpi.inpe.br/banon/1998/01.05.14.31", } @InProceedings{Zampirolli:1997:TMM, author = "Francisco de Assis Zampirolli", title = "Tutorial on mathematical morphology using graphs", booktitle = "Brazilian Workshop'97 on Mathematical Morphology", year = "1997", editor = "G.
